PragmaVar Research Group

Welcome to PragmaVar! The Pragmatics/Variation Research Group Lab, part of the Escuela/Escola Schwenteriana!

Our lab is dedicated to exploring language in context, with a focus on how variation, pragmatics, and interaction shape linguistic practices across different communities. We investigate a wide range of topics, including the linguistic choices speakers make when faced with multiple options for conveying meaning, the role of expressive meaning in language, and how metaphorical expressions evolve in second language learners. We are also deeply interested in the use of discourse markers and how they reflect social identities and attitudes within different cultural contexts.

Our research combines both qualitative and quantitative methods, drawing on large-scale corpus data and in-depth analysis of conversational interactions. We apply these methods to a variety of languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and Italian.
